Track refurbishment on the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard)

Trams 4 and 6 will be out of service between Blaha Lujza tér M station  and Corvin-negyed M station from 0100 AM Saturday, 13 October to 0400 AM Monday, 5 November 2012 due to construction. During this period, tram replacement buses will be operating between Blaha Lujza tér and Boráros tér in the daytime and between Széll Kálmán tér and Móricz Zsigmond körtér at night. Additionally, one lane of the road will be reserved for tram replacement buses and closed to car traffic.

The tracks of the busiest tramlines of Budapest, trams 4 and 6 on the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard), will be refurbished by BKV in order to upgrade deteriorated tracks thereby heightening travel comfort for passengers and also eliminating speed restrictions for trams. The refurbishment is financed from allocated development funds based on the public service contract between BKK and BKV. Thanks to the upgrade, the speed restriction will be eliminated on a 1,100 meter long track section between József utca and Üllői út enabling passengers to get to their destinations faster due to reduced travel times on the trams. The refurbishment works will include road junctions as well: in addition to the ones between József utca and Üllői út, the Bérkocsis utca junction will also be reconstructed. The new tram tracks will get uniform basalt flooring and the materials used for the refurbishment will make more silent tram service possible thereby lessening noise levels along the route.

During the time of refurbishment the entire track section between Blaha Lujza tér M and Corvin-negyed M will have to be closed to tram traffic from 1 am on Saturday 13 October to 4 am on Monday, 5 November 2012. Trams will be replaced by buses during this period daily between 4:00 and midnight between Blaha Lujza tér M and Boráros tér H; and on the full length of the line at night (daily between midnight and 4 am) between Széll Kálmán tér M and Móricz Zsigmond körtér.

Other public transport services

BKK will make every effort to ensure that passengers reach their destinations as fast as possible during the refurbishment period. Therefore, we provide higher frequencies on the following alternative transport routes:

Tram 2

Tram 2 runs more frequently during morning and afternoon peak-hours on school days.

Metro line M3

From Monday, 15 October trains run more frequently on metro line M3 during morning peak-hours on workdays.

Road transport

During the refurbishment major congestion is expected on the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard) and intersecting streets. Please avoid the area if possible. New tram replacement bus lanes will be designated in both directions on the József and Ferenc körút sections between Blaha Lujza tér and Boráros tér. Thus significant congestion is expected on Erzsébet körút towards Blaha Lujza tér on the section before Dohány utca, as well as on Petőfi híd towards Pest.

Further road traffic restrictions:

– Buses will change into the inside traffic lane after the Blaha Lujza tér, Népszínház utca bus stop. We would like to ask motorists to assist the buses in changing lanes.

– In the case of the intersecting streets affected by the refurbishment – with the exception of the Pál utca junction – the tram-track reconstruction will be carried out in two phases to allow the passing intersecting traffic. From 13 October to 5 November the traffic lights will be operating in a yellow blinking mode at the Pál utca junction. Turning will be allowed only to the right towards Üllői út.

– Only one traffic lane will be open in each direction on Baross utca. The current lane restriction due to construction at the Baross utca – Mária utca road junction will remain in place.

– In addition to the Nagykörút, congestion is expected on Üllői út and Baross utca before the Nagykörút junction as traffic restrictions will be in place on the intersecting roads as well.

– Motorists coming from Soroksári út towards the city centre should expect diverted lanes at the Boráros tér section to assist turning tram replacement buses.

– To assist road traffic three lanes will be open for the traffic coming from Petőfi híd towards Soroksári út at Boráros tér. The period of the green light will be extended at the Mester utca-Ferenc körút junction for those turning left towards Petőfi híd.

– Tram replacement buses will use the following routes to leave daily service: Közraktár utca – Bakáts utca – Lónyay utca – Kinizsi utca – Közraktár utca or Közraktár utca – Bakáts utca – Ráday utca – Boráros tér. On these routes expect parking restrictions. Please pay attention to the signs.

It is recommended for motorists to avoid the affected areas of the city as congestion is expected.

Passengers using public transport are advised to expect longer travel times on some routes due to road congestion, for instance on lines 9, 83 and 109. We recommend fixed-rail services instead: tram 2, metro lines M2 and M3 and tram 28 instead of bus 9.

BKK Centre for Budapest Transport aims to make sure that traffic is uninterrupted during the period of refurbishment as much as possible. We thank you for the understanding and apologise for the inconvenience.
